During the last full week of Social Work Month 2010,
NASW IL Chapter President Dennis Crowell and I traveled to Urbana and Kankakee
for district awards events, while Dennis participated in a Social Work Month
event co-sponsored by the East Central District in Normal and I attended the
Dominican University’s 3rd Annual African and Latino Social Work Symposium,
which the NASW IL Chapter co-sponsored.
On Tuesday evening, the East Central District,
chaired by Candi Gray, presented its district awards at Milos Restaurant in
Urbana, IL. The Public Citizen of the Year award was presented to Donna Camp, director
of Wesley Evening Food Pantry. Her nominator—longtime NASW IL member, former
Peoria District Chair, and current co-chair of the chapter’s Legislative/Social
Policy Committee—Judith Unger accepted the award in Donna’s absence. Other district
awards were presented to Carol Weissman-Acord,, MSW, LCSW, immediate past chapter
Treasurer and co-founder of Circle of Friends Adult Day Center & Geriatric
Consultants and Care Manages, Inc., in Champaign. The district Social Worker of
the Year award was presented to Jeff Scott, research assistant, doctoral
student, and adjunct faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign School
of Social Work. Jeff currently co-chairs the chapter’s Legislative/Social
Policy Committee with Judith Unger. Judith has mentored Jeff in his chapter
activities. Jeff is also involved in many other many other volunteer activities
in the Champaign area including the Champaign County Health Care Consumers
(CCHCC) and the Christian Social Action Ministry (CSAM).
Dennis and I were in different parts of the state
this past Wednesday for Social Work Month events. Dennis was in Normal, IL, for
“Preventing
Bullying: Building Respectful Communities for Our Children,” a CEU program that
the NASW IL East Central District presented together with the Illinois State
University (ISU) School of Social Work, the ISU Social Work Club, and Prevent
Child Abuse Illinois. Over 200 people attended.

I was in the Chicago area that
day for Dominican University’s 3rd Annual African & Latino
Social Work Symposium. The NASW IL Chapter was a co-sponsor of this event. Over
225 people attended this event which featured Stedman Graham and a morning
panel on “Building on the Strengths of African American & Latino
Communities through Economic and Community Development.” Alex Perez, a reporter
for the Chicago NBC5 News, moderated the panel. Two of the panelists included
social workers Donald Dew, longtime NASW IL member and President and Chief
Executive Officer of Habilitative Systems Inc.,
on Chicago’s west side, and Adam Alonso, executive director of Corazon
Community Services in Cicero, IL.
Dennis and I finished our Social Work Month travels
in Kankakee on Thursday evening for the Calumet District (chaired by Chasity Wells-Armstrong)
Awards event. District award winners included Public Citizen of the Year Ron
Jackson who is director of the Community Resource Center in Kankakee and is a product
of the foster care system who over the years has developed a deep appreciation
for social workers because he benefited from their investment in his life. District
Social Worker of the Year was presented to Jill Skole, MSW, CADC, and executive
director of Agape Missions, NFP, in Joliet which
provides social services to persons with HIV/AIDS and noninfected individuals.
The district’s Lifetime Achievement award was presented to Jan Hockensmith, MSW,
ACSW, and former Calumet District Chair. Janice is associate professor in the Department of Social
Work in Olivet's School of Professional Studies. She is also the social work
field education director. Jan has been active over the years in the chapter’s
International Activities Shared Interest Group (SIG).
Dennis and I attended many Social Work Month events and
met many social workers making a difference in communities around Illinois. As
the month ends, one small story stands out as continued inspiration for the
profession. Prior to the Calumet District event which was held at the Kankakee
Public Library, a young library employee approached Dennis and me inquiring
about the event and his interest in the profession. He is currently a student
at the local community college in Kankakee and plans on transferring to
Governors State University to study social work. We discussed the many rewards
the profession provides. We look forward to his eventual entry into the
profession.
Whichever holiday you observe this week, be it
Passover, Easter, or another festival, enjoy.
